The project also included the development of a style guide for the creation of promotional and customer touchpoint materials, including signage, web assets and merchandise. This reflected an integrated design approach across multiple platforms with artistic and design integrity at the centre.

Balarinji employed its innovative best practice public art co-design and community collaboration framework to the project to create the fuselage design. Collaborating deeply with the artist, her family, her community and the Tjungu Palya Arts Centre, ensured the cultural significance of the artwork was central to the project.

Through art, colour and story, the contemporary design expresses Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander philosophies about sustainability, including living close to and caring for Country, ideas which are deeply embedded within Indigenous culture and practice and can inform Australia and the world. The iconic statement highlights Indigenous meaning for sustainability by using a prominent green colour palette, including changing the airline’s iconic tail from red to green.

This project has won multiple awards since its launch in February 2024. Including: the INTERACT Award in the 2024 Designers Australia Awards, 2024 Good Design Awards Gold Winner in the Communication Design category for exceptional design and innovation; and the 2024 Sydney Design Awards Gold Winner in the Graphic Design: Identity and Branding category.

The Minyma Kutjara Tjukurpa Art Aircraft is underpinned by a 40-year partnership between Qantas and Balarinji. The Qantas-Balarinji partnership began in 1983 when Qantas sold Balarinji’s Aboriginal-themed silk and superfine wool scarves on board. We’ve gone on to work together across four decades, on six aircraft in the Qantas-Balarinji Flying Art Series and Qantas’ long-running uniform textile, Wirriyarra.

“Balarinji’s 'Minyma Kutjara Tjukurpa Art Aircraft' is a striking example of how design can elevate Indigenous narratives and foster cultural understanding on a global scale. By translating Maringka Baker’s powerful artwork onto a Qantas A220, Balarinji has created a flying ambassador for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. The jury was particularly impressed by the meticulous design process, which involved careful consideration of scale, colour, and the aircraft’s form to ensure the artwork’s integrity.”
