The Designers Australia Awards, presented by the Design Institute of Australia, promote ideas, creativity, diversity, and processes and reinforce design’s social, cultural, economic and environmental impact.
The Awards jury commented: Balarinji’s “Minyma Kutjara Tjukurpa Art Aircraft” is a striking example of how design can elevate Indigenous narratives and foster cultural understanding on a global scale. By translating Maringka Baker’s powerful artwork onto a Qantas A220, Balarinji has created a flying ambassador for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. The jury was particularly impressed by the meticulous design process, which involved careful consideration of scale, colour, and the aircraft’s form to ensure the artwork’s integrity. Indeed, the technical feat of applying 20,700 individually painted dots to the aircraft’s fuselage is a testament to Balarinji’s dedication to excellence. This intricate execution elevates the artwork, transforming the aircraft into a large-scale canvas that commands attention and inspires awe. The project’s success lies not only in its visual impact but also in its collaborative spirit. Balarinji’s commitment to authentic engagement with the artist and her community shines through, setting a benchmark for ethical and respectful co-creation. In a post-Voice referendum Australia, this project serves as a powerful symbol of reconciliation and a celebration of the nation’s rich Indigenous heritage.
Minyma Kutjara Tjukurpa is the sixth aircraft in the Qantas-Balarinji Flying Art Series since 1994 with the launch of Wunala Dreaming. Launched in February 2024, the A220 Minyma Kutjara Tjukurpa Art Aircraft is an important and powerful expression of Australian identity. Telling the Two Sisters Creation story, through design excellence, it celebrates family, resilience and the principles of caring for Country.
Balarinji Co-Founder and Managing Director, Ros Moriarty, said, “We are honoured that this beautiful aircraft has been recognised as a standout example of how design can influence how we think about ourselves as Australians and how we can all celebrate our nation’s rich 65,000-year heritage. Balarinji is very proud to have designed this landmark ‘green’ livery, working in co-design with the renowned artist Maringka Baker and her family.”
“Thank you to our long-time partner Qantas. It was a privilege to deliver the sixth aircraft in the Flying Art series. Like each aircraft before, Minyma Kutjara Tjukurpa inspires positive social change and is a powerful example of how design can celebrate identity and belonging.”
In 2024, Minyma Kutjara Tjukurpa also won Gold in the Good Design Awards and Gold in the Sydney Design Awards.
