Balarinji was commissioned by the Jezzine Barracks Community Trust to conceptualise, manage and install 33 major works of public art, and 100 pieces of interpretive signage for the $40m 14.7 hectare site in Townsville, Queensland.
The redevelopment opened in 2014, and paid tribute to the area’s Bindal and Wulgurukaba Traditional Owners. Balarinji also delivered art and interpretation of Jezzine Barracks’ military history, when it was Kissing Point Fort.
Balarinji art directed and project managed 13 local Aboriginal artists and six Queensland installation artists to work together in partnership with Traditional Owners, elders and the Military Committee to deliver the works. The engagement process included historical, thematic and community art workshops, and collaborative fabrication.
